Nationwide Asset Tracking of 100,000+ Kegs with Largo AMT

A leading alcoholic beverage manufacturer and distributor in Indonesia faced a critical operational challenge: managing and tracking over 100,000 returnable kegs distributed across the country.

These kegs, used as containers for draft beer, are high-value assets that circulate constantly between the company’s production facilities, distribution centers, and customers such as bars, restaurants, and event venues.

1. The Challenge

The challenge was twofold:

  • Limited visibility into the current location and movement status of each keg, especially once it left the company’s premises.

  • High risk of asset loss or misplacement, leading to mounting replacement costs and inefficient keg utilization.

With thousands of kegs in transit or sitting idle at customer locations at any given time, the company needed a real-time, scalable, and low-touch solution to track keg movements both inside facilities and out in the field—without disrupting existing operations.

2. Our Solution

We deployed Largo AMT (Asset Movement Tracking), a solution designed specifically for tracking high-volume returnable assets across complex logistics flows. This implementation enabled end-to-end keg tracking, from warehouse to customer and back.

Key features of the solution:

  • Tagging of each keg for unique, automated identification.

  • Checkpoint-based tracking using handheld devices at strategic locations (e.g., loading bays, delivery trucks, and return docks).

  • Cloud-based monitoring dashboard, offering real-time visibility into asset location, movement history, and usage patterns.

  • Exception alerting for delayed returns, unusual asset idle time, or potential losses.

Largo AMT was integrated with the client’s existing logistics processes without the need for heavy operational changes, ensuring quick adoption by internal teams and logistics partners.

3. The Outcome

With Largo AMT in place, the beverage company now has full visibility and control over its fleet of 100,000+ kegs, whether inside their facilities or deployed at customer sites nationwide.

Key outcomes:

  • Drastically reduced asset loss and replacement costs, thanks to real-time traceability.

  • Improved keg circulation rate, resulting in more efficient usage of existing assets.

  • Better customer accountability, with visibility into which sites are holding assets for extended periods.

  • Data-driven asset planning, enabling smarter production, distribution, and return scheduling.

Largo AMT has become a strategic tool in the company’s operations, ensuring the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of their returnable asset program while enhancing service reliability for customers. The latest version of Largo AMT already employs RFID-based technology with fixed checkpoints as well as handheld devices to further streamline the whole process.
